Weed Firm is, or rather was, a popular app for iOS where you grow marijuana. We haven’t played the game, but presumably it’s a fairly good game, or its userbase is so high it doesn’t matter. But either way, Apple has yanked it off the iOS store.
A Questionable Policy
This is far from the first time an app has been removed from the store because it somehow offended Apple’s delicate sensibilities. Apple tightly polices its marketplace to prevent spam and fraud, but it also appears to impose a certain moral strictness on any apps that appear. Whether this is because Apple is run by prudes or because Apple is worried about selling phones in places that don’t have freedom of speech, it happens quite a bit, and Weed Firm is just the latest example.
A Questionable Response
Manitoba Games has, in response, complained that you can do other illegal things in video games, like crash cars and shoot people. A response that would have a lot more weight if they weren’t, uh, editing the game so it can be posted back on the iOS Store. Honestly, everyone should have limited patience when stoners while about oppression, but to be honest it’s hard to take Manitoba’s outrage all that seriously when apparently growing cannabis is so secondary to the game itself it can be excised with little issue. So basically you’re complaining that Apple is removing your marketing gimmick?
Still, An Issue
That said, Manitoba does have a point in that adults should be able to decide what they do with their electronics, as long as it isn’t hurting anyone. It’s unlikely that Apple is going to change, though: The company has always been a notorious control freak. Which is yet another reason that, long term, it’s time to dump your iPhone.
